But what is interesting (and unique, at least in the five books of the series I've read so far) is that Harry Flashman actually sometimes acts with compassion in Great Game, and even - whisper it - bravery. It's certainly up there with the first Flashman and the fourth, Flashman at the Charge (though Royal Flash and Flash for Freedom! are excellent too). And I've been contemplating whether Great Game is in fact the best one I've read yet. just about every single thing that you can think of which contributes to creating a great novel and a great reading experience - well, the Flashman books all have them in spades. Adventure, action, laughs, pathos, emotion, twists and turns, good prose, excellent characterisation. And I'm sat here, having just finished Flashman in the Great Game, thinking that there's no better way to spend a day - any day, not just a birthday - than to spend it reading a Flashman novel.
